President's Letter - April 2016

Dear Council Representatives and Chapter Members,

As we quickly wind down this IMA year, I want to take a moment to thank all of you for the pleasure of serving as your Council President this year.  It has been an experience I will never forget . . . an amazing opportunity to get to know each of our chapters better – what unique approaches each of you have and what challenges you face.  My wish is that I have found some way to help your chapter this year, and leave the Council better than when I started!

I want to express my appreciation to my fellow Council officers – Susan Maddux, Eric Mauer, and Paula Wilcox.  We started out a very “front-loaded” year, with multiple new initiatives and improvements early in the year; thanks for your support and dedication!  Thanks also to long-time Council members and mentors, Martha Alle, Brad Hamilton, and Ginger White, for their guidance and wisdom throughout the year.  The following chapter members have also assisted us by serving on various committees: Meredith Albright, Denise Dennis, Dennis Harding, Charles McClellan, and Rebecca Zhu.  Thanks is also owed to all chapter leaders that attended our Council meetings this year.  When they say it takes a village, it really does . . . and our “village” helped achieve the following:

  • Helped send two students to Student Leadership Conference in Florida with $500 scholarships each.
  • Implemented WebEx to allow remote participation in our Council meetings starting in January – it allowed us to “weather” the winter storm that would have otherwise caused us to cancel our January meeting.
  • Revived our chapter visits – I enjoyed meeting our chapter boards!
  • Started hosting “brownbag” sessions to continue conversations between Council meetings on topics of interest to our chapter leaders.  Recordings are available via our Brownbag Series Page.
  • Revived our best practices sharing sessions at our Council meetings to encourage sharing of ideas among chapter leaders.
  • Increased our CPE offering from 2 CPE in 2014/2015 to 20 CPE in 2015/2016, including our PD seminars and leadership topics at our Council meetings.
  • Hosted two successful MrExcel seminars with over 125 registrants and raised over $6,000 in profit to support Council initiatives, a record-breaking amount for the Council.

Lastly, thank you to all of our chapter leaders for your continued service to your chapter.  I ask you one remaining favor – please continue to challenge the Council on how we can better serve you!  We exist to support you!

We ended our 40th anniversary year with our last quarterly Council meeting in Nashville, TN on Saturday, April 23rd.  We tried to pack in some FUN, including having our own version of the CMA awards, to help celebrate our chapters.  Check out our News & Updates page for award recipients.  We also played "Hanky Panky" minute-to-win-it challenge . . . incoming Council Secretary Meredith Albright was the winner!

April 2016 Council Meeting

For those attending IMA’s Annual Conference & Expo in Las Vegas in June, incoming Council President Paula Wilcox is working on some social events at the conference; watch for announcements.  Also, save-the-date for the next Council meeting in Lexington, KY on Saturday, July 23rd.  I hope to see you at our upcoming events!

President's Letter - January 2016

Dear Council Representatives and Chapter Members,

Your Council officers recognized early in our planning year that there were two major opportunities for the Council: (1) communication, both with our chapters and within the Council and (2) fundraising, to help build a more sustainable future.  We have been hard at work this fall and have several exciting things to update you on!  Highlights are included below.  Check back often for updates, and make sure to "like" our Council Facebook page and/or follow us on Twitter @lincolntrailima to receive additional notifications!

  • Brownbag series - We have created a forum for sharing ideas and more in-depth discussions between Council meetings, via our "brownbag" series.  Our goal is to have one or two sessions, via WebEx, between Council meetings.  Our third session, "Chapter Competition and Compensation: Understanding the Basics," will be on December 22nd and January 5th from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. EST via WebEx.  See Brownbag Series page to register. We will discuss the basic minimum requirements for chapter competition and compensation and four core "points" categories (membership, certification, education, and chapter service points.)  Please also see our Brownbag Series page for Webex playback and notes on prior sessions.  Our first session was in September and included a discussion on the basics of using Google Forms to automate RSVP's, evaluations, applications, surveys, etc.  Our second session, "How Did You Do That on Google Sites," covered helpful hints and basics on Google Sites that we have included in our Council website.
  • Lincoln Trail Council Meeting on January 23rd - Our January Council meeting in Columbus, Indiana (South Central Indiana chapter) includes an optional 1 CPE session on "Chapter Competition and Compensation: How to Maximize Chapter Level Service Points and Certification Electives;" is is somewhat Part 2 of our December brownbag session.  There is also an optional chapter sharing session on "Chapter Succession Planning."  We also plan to have a little FUN with a luncheon at Puccini's and after-meeting social at Zahakarus Ice Creaam Parlor.  In addition, for those not able to attend the meeting in-person, this is the first meeting we will have a WebEx connection available.  See our Events Page for more detail and to RSVP.
  • Scholarships for Student Leadership Conference - The Council awarded two $500 SLC scholarships in November to IMA student members demonstrating leadership in its chapters: Rebecca Zimberg (Western Kentucky University) and Marianne Jimenez (Middle Tennessee State University).  See our Student Leadership Conference Page for feedback on their experience.  Thanks to my fellow scholarship committee members for their efforts: Eric Mauer (chair), Meredith Albright, Susan Maddux, Charles McClellan, and Rebecca Zhu.  Particular thanks to Chair Eric Mauer for helping to streamline the application process!
  • Successful fundraising at MrExcel seminars – The Council hosted two successful MrExcel seminars in October: one in Nashville, TN and the other in Louisville, KY.  The seminars were well attended, with about 125 attendees total; attendees not only included Nashville and Louisville Chapter members, but also chapter members from other local chapters and local non-members, as well.  We raised over $6,000 in profit to support Council initiatives, a record-breaking amount for the Council.  Special thanks to the dedication of my fellow seminar committee members: Martha Alle, Denise Dennis, Susan Maddux, Eric Mauer, Ginger White, and Paula Wilcox!  Particular thanks to Council Treasurer Susan Maddux for helping us secure MEF grant from Global IMA.  Council VP Paula Wilcox will be chairing a newly formed fundraising committee to extend our efforts beyond the MrExcel seminars; myself and Council Delegates Meredith Albright and Dennis Harding have also joined the committee and we will be meeting for the first time in December to discuss possible plans.

At any time, please do not hesitate to reach out and let me know how the Council could better serve your chapter.  I hope to see you at our January 23rd meeting in Columbus, Indiana!

Warm Regards,

I have been able to join many of our chapters this summer at one of their board planning sessions, and I hope to visit with the remaining chapters later this summer or fall. I have enjoyed meeting our chapter leaders and getting to know more about each chapter. Kudos to all for your summer planning efforts!

I hope to see you at one of our upcoming MrExcel seminars or our October Council meeting!
